35 Deputy Brian O’Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science if the proposed public service pension levy will apply to school caretakers and school secretaries even though neither are entitled to a public service pension due to the terms and conditions they receive from his Department; his views on whether the application of the levy to the salaries of these employees would be profoundly unjust; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The public service pensions-related deduction applies to public servants working in public service bodies who contribute to a pension scheme, or who receive a payment in lieu of such a contribution. Those secretaries and caretakers who are members of a public service contributory pension scheme will be affected by the measure. However, employees who do not contribute to a pension scheme will not be affected by the public service pensions-related deduction.
