87 Deputy Michael Creed asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of the fact that part-time firemen do not receive a pension from the local authority, he will ensure that they are not liable for the public service pension levy as recently announced; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Amharc ar fhreagraRetained firefighters are subject to the pension-related deduction as they are, in fact, entitled to join the Local Government Superannuation Scheme and receive a pension and lump sum from a local authority. Those who do not take that option are covered by a non-contributory retirement gratuity arrangement.
While they are not exempted from the deduction, I did undertake during the Dáil debate on the deduction to have their case examined to see if there are exceptional circumstances with regard to this group of public servants.
