Broughan asked the Minister for Social and Family Affairs if she will report on the operation of the cycle to work scheme in her Department; if all agencies under the remit of her Department will be included in the scheme; if not, the reason for same; the State agencies under the remit of her Department currently offering this scheme to employees; and if she will make a statement on the matter. Amharc ar fhreagraSection 7 of the Finance (No.2) Act 2008 introduced an exemption from an income tax charge under section 118 of the Taxes Consolidation Act 1997 in respect of a benefit in the form of a bicycle or associated safety equipment provided to a director or employee by his or her employer, where the bicycle/associated safety equipment is used by the employee or director mainly for qualifying journeys. I understand that my colleague the Minister for Finance will shortly be issuing instructions to Government Departments on how the scheme should be implemented in the public sector.

Amharc ar fhreagraMy Department supports the provisions of Section 7 of the Finance (No. 2) Act 2008 which introduced an exemption from an income tax charge under section 118 of the Taxes Consolidation Act 1997 in respect of a benefit in the form of a bicycle or associated safety equipment provided to a director or employee by his or her employer, where the bicycle/associated safety equipment is used by the employee or director mainly for qualifying journeys. My Department is considering the detailed arrangements that will be required to implement the scheme.
