Ceisteanna (286)

Pat Breen

Ceist:

376 Deputy Pat Breen asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason a child (details supplied) in County Clare with mild special needs has to have an ability test for admission to a school when the similar test has been completed in the UK previously; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I wish to advise the Deputy that the enrolment of a child in a school is a matter in the first instance for the parents of the child and the Board of Management of the school concerned. My Department has no role in relation to processing applications for enrolment in schools nor does it seek to intervene in decisions made by schools in such matters.

I understand that relevant professional reports, detailing the child's cognitive ability, have been requested to ensure that the proposed placement in the special school in question is appropriate. I understand that no such reports have been provided to the school.
