102 Deputy Pat Rabbitte asked the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources the position regarding combined heat and power and the soon to be introduced carbon tax; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16636/10]
Amharc ar fhreagraThere will be no carbon tax liability for Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Plants which are powered by biomass. Plants within the European Emissions Trading System (ETS), which are typically over 20MW in capacity and which account for a very large proportion of the gas fired CHP units are also exempt from the carbon tax. Fossil fuel CHP units outside the ETS scheme are currently subject to carbon tax. Discussions are ongoing with the Department of Finance in this regard.
