209 Deputy Róisín Shortall asked the Minister for Social Protection his intention, if any, to alter civil registration legislation to address anomalies whereby some couples can avoid paying marriage notification fees. [40996/10]
Amharc ar fhreagraThe matter raised by the Deputy refers to the fact that parties to a proposed marriage who obtain a court exemption from the requirement to give to a registrar three months notification of intention to marry are not required to pay the notification fee which is currently €150. A general review of the provisions of the Civil Registration Act 2004 is being carried out by An tArd-Chláraitheoir (Registrar General) who has statutory responsibility in relation to the administration of the Civil Registration Service. It is expected that this review will be completed early in 2011. The matter raised by the Deputy will be included in the review. As the Deputy is aware, there are a number of steps to be taken before any amending legislation might come before the Oireachtas and it is not possible to be definite as to timescales at this juncture.
