59 Deputy Eamon Gilmore asked the Minister for Justice and Law Reform if the Garda Commissioner has sought additional powers to allow the Garda to better deal with white collar crime; the nature of the additional powers sought; if it is intended to grant these powers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Amharc ar fhreagraIn May of this year I asked the Garda Commissioner to examine the law in the area of white collar crime in light of experience gained in current and past investigations.
The Commissioner has recently replied to my request and has made a number of proposals with a view to enhancing the capacity of the Garda Síochána to tackle such crime.
As the Commissioner's proposals have implications for various of areas of the law, I have written to the relevant ministerial colleagues and the Attorney General to seek their observations and advice on the proposals.
