406 Deputy Timmy Dooley asked the Minister for Justice and Equality if he will clarify the issue in relation to an Irish citizen who worked in a number of countries abroad for an aid agency and now requires police clearance from each of the countries they worked in before they can take up a position here; if An Garda Síochána, their employer or the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade should assist them in getting the appropriate information and clearance as they are unemployed here while awaiting Garda clearance. I am informed by the Garda Authorities that policies relating to background checks in respect of individuals (including any Irish citizen who may have worked overseas) who are applying for positions within such organisations are established by the organisations themselves and not by the Garda Síochána. If the individual in question has difficulty in corresponding with the relevant authorities of a particular country, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade would provide any necessary assistance.
