As the Deputy is aware, the proposed amendment to Article 35.5, which was approved by the Irish people last Thursday, retains the general protection that judges' pay should not be reduced except in the circumstances set out in the amendment, i.e., by law when the pay of public servants is reduced by law in the public interest. Only then can the pay of serving judges be reduced proportionately.

I welcome the fact that the amendment has been accepted and the new provisions form part of the Constitution. The legislation necessary to give effect to the Amendment will be published by the Government within the next few weeks with a view to its early passage through the Oireachtas.
