461 Deputy Maureen O’Sullivan asked the Minister for Justice and Equality if in the event of the former residents of the Magdalen laundries making a complaint to An Garda Síochána, if he will clarify the matter of the statute of limitations and if the State will cover the costs for those ladies many of whom are existing on limited means. In meetings with the women concerned and associated groups, it has been stressed that there is no statute of limitations in this jurisdiction for serious criminal offences and that if they have been the victim of an offence, they should report the matter to the Gardaí for criminal investigation. There are no monetary costs to a victim as such associated with a Garda criminal investigation and prosecution.
