196 Deputy Billy Timmins asked the Minister for Education and Skills the position regarding reasonable accommodation access to a scribe for State examinations when a person is not dyslexic but is a slow writer and feels that they need the help of a scribe; the assistance that is available or the way they qualify for a scribe; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Amharc ar fhreagraThe State Examinations Commission has statutory responsibility for operational matters relating to the certificate examinations. They have in place criteria for reasonable accommodation including an independent appeals system. All applications for reasonable accommodations are considered in light ofa published Framework of Principles as set out by the Expert Advisory Group onexaminations.
The State Examinations Commission provides a range of measures to facilitate candidates with particular needs. These include the provision of readers and scribes, the production of modified papers; brailed and enlarged papers; use of tape recorders and personal computers; and exemption of waivers in respect of particular components. Some of these measures require the establishment of special examination centres.
