Thursday, 28 June 2012

Ceisteanna (271)

Brian Walsh

Ceist:

275 Deputy Brian Walsh asked the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he will consider the establishment of a compensation scheme in the form of monetary payments or future tax credits for taxi drivers wishing to leave the industry in view of diminished incomes as a result of an increase in the number of operators; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I have no plans to introduce any financial incentives for individuals to exit the taxi market such as those measures suggested by the Deputy. I am aware of the challenges facing the taxi industry and, indeed, all sectors of the economy in the current difficult economic climate. I consider that the implementation of the Taxi Regulation Review recommendations will lead to a more professional operating environment for taxi drivers and create long-term economically sustainable jobs in the industry.

The Review measures will ensure better enforcement of the taxi regulations, improved standards within the regulated industry and enhance the quality of service delivery to customers.
