The payment of a Gaeltacht allowance in the Civil Service arises from the Local Offices (Irish Language) Regulations, 1966, which permits the payment of “additional remuneration” not exceeding “seven and one half per cent of the rate per annum of the annual basic salary of the said holder” where certain conditions of service are met. Since the establishment of my own Department in July 2011, no member of staff has been paid a Gaeltacht allowance. Information regarding the Gaeltacht allowance submitted to my Department in the course of the review of allowances and premium payments in the public sector has been made available on my Department's website – http://www.per.gov.ie/ As the detailed information sought by the Deputy in relation to the amount and number of beneficiaries of the allowances in the Civil Service or the wider public service is not available to my Department, it should be sought from the responsible Departments.
