Ceist:

797. Deputy Ciarán Lynch asked the Minister for Justice and Equality if an Garda Síochána are required to use marked cars and not to use unmarked cars when deploying speed cameras; if such cars are required to be visible to oncoming traffic or may they be concealed; the other requirements that apply; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I am informed by the Garda authorities that there is no legal requirement for members of An Garda Síochána to use marked vehicles when conducting speed enforcement, or that the vehicles be visible to on-coming traffic. As a matter of Garda policy, safety camera vans operated by the service provider, GoSafe, are fully marked. Garda safety vans are used both overtly and covertly. Similarly, speed enforcement may be carried out by Garda personnel when using marked and unmarked cars and marked motorcycles.
