637. Deputy Martin Ferris asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine his views on the discrepancy between the volume of cod landed here and the volume of cod sold through retail and catering outlets and bought by public institutions such as hospitals and prisons. [8910/13]
Amharc ar fhreagraAt EU level there is a common organisation of the market in fishery and aquaculture products. The movements of fish and fishery products are largely unrestricted within the EU while imports of fish and seafood from outside the EU are strictly regulated. Decisions on the sourcing of fish or fish products for the retail and catering outlets and purchased by public institutions are a matter for the individual enterprises concerned. Accordingly there is not any direct relationship between the volume of cod landed and purchased within Ireland.
