Ceist:

71. Deputy Brendan Griffin asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade if he will be supportive of efforts to bring about an official visit from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to the State; his views that, amongst many other merits, such a visit would help market Ireland as a holiday destination for UK residents, particularly among the younger demographic; if he will make contact with the appropriate authorities to ensure that a formal invitation will be extended by the State; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Deepening relations between Britain and Ireland, including through high-level visits, is a priority for this Government. The visit of Queen Elizabeth II in 2011 symbolised the modern and friendly relationship of equals which exists between our two countries. Building on the momentum generated by that visit, President Higgins has visit Britain on 3 separate occasions since his inauguration and met with Queen Elizabeth in Belfast in June 2012. This ongoing high-level engagement reinforces the close ties that exist between Britain and Ireland. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge would be very welcome to visit Ireland in that context.
