531. Deputy Niall Collins asked the Minister for Justice and Equality his plans, if any, to review the criteria for the refusal of firearm licences to encompass medical assessments; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25567/13]
Amharc ar fhreagraI can inform the Deputy that section 4 of the Firearms Act 1925, as amended, outlines the conditions subject to which a firearm certificate may be granted by an issuing person. It includes a provision that an applicant may be asked to supply information requested in the application form and such further information as the issuing person may require. The provision includes, the power to make enquiries in relation to an applicant's medical history if the issuing officer, in most cases a Superintendent, considers it necessary when considering an application for a firearm certificate. While the Firearms Acts are being kept under review, I have no proposals for a change, at present, in relation to the matter referred to by the Deputy.
