Ceisteanna (408)

Clare Daly

Ceist:

408. Deputy Clare Daly asked the Minister for Justice and Equality if he has considered giving members of the Garda Reserve preferential treatment in applications for full membership of An Garda Síochána, in view of the fact that many of them would have undertaken a number of courses and training relevant to An Garda Síochána, that they would have put in years of loyal service and that their recruitment could essentially streamline the recruitment process. Recruitment to An Garda Síochána is governed by statutory regulations. The current Garda Síochána (Admissions and Appointments) (Amendment) Regulation 2006, expressly allows the Public Appointments Service to take into account any satisfactory service by a person as a reserve member of the Garda Síochána, when they are applying to join the full time force. These regulations are currently being consolidated and revised and the same provisions for Reserve members will be incorporated into the new regulations.
