261. Deputy Terence Flanagan asked the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform the position regarding a flood defence wall (details supplied) in County Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5090/14]
Amharc ar fhreagraThe investigation and addressing of coastal protection problems are matters for the relevant Local Authority in the first instance. In 2013, Fingal County Council applied for funding from the Office of Public Works (OPW) to engage consultants to progress a flood defence scheme recommended in the report of the Fingal-East Meath Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management Study that includes works on Strand Road to address flooding affecting a number of areas including Sutton. The OPW agreed on 24 October, 2013 to fund the engagement of consultants to develop further the scheme proposals, including undertaking a full assessment of their economic viability. It is a matter for the County Council to progress the matter.
If built flood defence infrastructure in the area was damaged by recent storms it would be open to Fingal County Council to submit an application for funding to repair it under the OPW Minor Flood Works and Coastal Protection Scheme. It is also open to the Council to carry out flood mitigation and coastal protection works using its own resources.
