Deputy Mattie McGrath asked the Minister for Health the status of the alternative scheme announced by his Department on 26 February 2013 that the motorised transport grant scheme was closed to new applicants and that an alternative scheme was being devised to replace it; when he expects it to come into force; and if he will make a statement on the matter. In November 2013, the Government decided that the detailed preparatory work required for a new travel subsidy scheme and associated statutory provisions should be progressed by the Minister for Health, in consultation with other relevant Ministers. The Department of Health is working to progress this matter in line with the Government's decision.
The Department will draw on the work, last year, of the Review Group on Transport Supports for People with Disabilities and the Inter-Departmental Group tasked by Government to consider details of a statutory replacement for the discontinued Mobility Allowance and Motorised Transport Grant Schemes.
