274. Deputy Jonathan O'Brien asked the Minister for Education and Skills the number of schools using iPads and other tablet equipment rather than hard copy books. [29726/14]

Since the introduction of tablet devices in schools is an operational matter for the Board of Management of each school, I am not in a position to provide the number of schools that have done so. I believe it is important that where new technology, is being adopted by schools, parents should be consulted prior to the decision being made and that the costs implications are fully considered by the Boards of Managements. The Professional Development Service for Teachers (Technology in Education) are available to advise schools on the use of technology in the classroom.
