Deputy Charlie McConalogue asked the Minister for Education and Skills if she will confirm that she will not seek to proceed with proposals to include a capital assets test for the purposes of calculating eligibility for student maintenance grants; and if she will make a statement on the matter. Amharc ar fhreagraThe Deputy will be aware that, following agreement in principle by the Government to broaden the current means testing arrangements for student grants by way of inclusion of the value of capital assets, my Department set up a dedicated implementation group to bring forward detailed proposals and subsequently received a draft report from the group.
However, there is currently no agreement between the two parties in coalition on broadening the base of the assessment from household income to reserves, savings or capital assets. The matter remains under review.
