Deputy Anne Ferris asked the Minister for Justice and Equality to detail the number of deaths by suicide in Irish prisons in each of the years 2012 to 2014, inclusive; the number of deaths by suicide of released former prisoners on temporary release or remission in the same years; and if she will make a statement on the matter. Amharc ar fhreagraThe Irish Prison Service has advised that there were two confirmed deaths by suicide in its institutions during 2012, and two confirmed deaths by suicide in 2013.
The Coroners verdict as to the cause of deaths in custody in 2014 is still awaited, it is not possible to confirm the number of these were deaths by suicide.
The Irish Prison Service has confirmed that there have been no deaths by suicide recorded for persons who died while on temporary release for the period in question.
