Deputy Michael McGrath asked the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport the Department or agency that takes responsibility for the hazard to motorists posed by wild deer; the recourse that is available to motorists in the event of an accident involving wild deer; the person/bodies that are responsible for investigating such incidents; the steps that are being taken to address this issue; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Appropriate road signage, including hazard warning signs regarding deer or other wild animals, is the responsibility of the local authorities.
It is the responsibility of motorists to anticipate hazardous situations, including those that may be posed by wildlife, and drive appropriately. Compensation following road traffic incidents involving wild animals would involve the establishment of liability. This would be a matter for the motorist's insurer or for private litigation. Investigations regarding road traffic accidents are a matter for An Garda Síochána.
