Ceisteanna (196)

Peadar Tóibín

Ceist:

196. Deputy Peadar Tóibín asked the Minister for Education and Skills to set down the number of children who are living in the feeder areas of secondary schools in the Navan area of County Meath who will be expected to apply for a place in these secondary schools in September 2016, September 2017, September 2018 and September 2019; the number of first-year places that will be available in each of these schools in each of these years; and given the complete lack of places available for Irish language post-primary education in Navan, her plans to resolve this problem. Seven hundred and thirty pupils approximately are expected to apply for a first year place in the post-primary schools in Navan each year for the years 2016–2018. This number is expected to increase slightly to seven hundred and fifty pupils in the year 2019. The information available to the Department in respect of the forthcoming year, 2016/17 is that all pupils who have applied for a first year place in 2016 have been offered a place and that there are still some places available. The situation will continue to be monitored by my Department to ensure that adequate places are available. With regard to all-Irish post-primary education in the area, while there is no all-Irish post-primary school in Navan town, there is an all-Irish post-primary school in Athboy which is accessed by students from Gaelscoil Eanna in Navan.
