656. Deputy Noel Coonan asked the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport the status of the Shannon river crossing project at Killaloe in County Clare and Ballina in County Tipperary, including when it will proceed, the impact of the judicial review; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The improvement and maintenance of regional and local roads is the statutory responsibility of each local authority, in accordance with the provisions of Section 13 of the Roads Act 1993. Works on those roads are funded from local authorities' own resources supplemented by State road grants.  The initial selection and prioritisation of works to be funded is also a matter for the local authority.

I understand that An Bord Pleanála granted planning approval to Clare County Council respect of this scheme in 2013 but that this decision was subsequently referred for judicial review. As a decision on the outcome of the judicial review process is awaited, it is not possible to confirm any further details until that process is completed.
