Direct Provision System

Dáil Éireann Debate, Wednesday - 8 February 2017

Wednesday, 8 February 2017

Ceisteanna (100)

Catherine Murphy

Ceist:

100. Deputy Catherine Murphy asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the progress being made on her commitment in February 2015 to allow asylum seekers living in direct provision to have their complaints independently examined by the Ombudsman and the Ombudsman for Children in line with the recommendations of the 2015 working group report, Improvements to the Protection Process, including direct provision and supports to asylum seekers; her views on the lack of action on this commitment in principle and the timeline of actions for ensuring that children living in direct provision have access to the services of the Ombudsman; and if she will make a statement on the matter. The extension of the role of the Ombudsman and the Ombudsman for Children to persons resident in State provided accommodation is currently at an advanced stage following the conclusion of consultations with the Office of the Attorney General. I expect to make a more formal announcement on this issue shortly and that both offices will begin the roll out of information programmes immediately thereafter.
