Deputy Éamon Ó Cuív asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs the number of hectares in each county that are designated special areas of conservation, special protection areas and natural heritage areas, by county in tabular form; and if she will make a statement on the matter. Ireland is committed to the implementation of the EU Nature Directives. It has identified and protected 439 sites for designation or designated as special areas of conservation and 154 sites as special protection areas. In addition, 148 natural heritage areas have been designated under the Wildlife (Amendment) Act 2000.
