Ceisteanna (635)

Catherine Murphy

Ceist:

635. Deputy Catherine Murphy asked the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport his plans to enforce the Road Traffic Act 2016, which gives effect to an agreement with the UK on mutual recognition of driver disqualifications which was signed in October 2015, in view of Brexit; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Mutual recognition of driving disqualifications is on target to be put in place between Ireland and the UK within the coming months once the necessary administrative arrangements between Ireland and the UK have been put in place.

I do not believe that Brexit will have any effect on this arrangement.  The European Commission previously confirmed that Ireland was free to negotiate a bilateral agreement with the UK regarding Mutual recognition of driving disqualifications and Brexit should not have any effect on the proposed new arrangement.
