1156. Deputy Bernard J. Durkan asked the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment the extent to which procedures to restore disused or exhausted quarries are in force having particular regard to the need to ensure public safety, the reduction of pollution threat and the need to protect the environment; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Under the Minerals Development Acts 1940 to 1999, my Department is responsible for the regulation of mineral exploration and mining. My Department has no function in respect of regulating the quarrying of stone, sand, gravel or clay, with this falling to be dealt with by local authorities.
