38. Deputy James Browne asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality if she will introduce legislation to provide for mandatory inquiries by the coroner in the event of a death of a mother during childbirth; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23687/17]
Amharc ar fhreagraI can confirm to the Deputy that I intend to introduce legislation regarding maternal deaths and related matters to ensure that such deaths are subject to a coroner's inquest. That work, to which I have assigned priority, will be undertaken in consultation with the relevant stakeholders and I would acknowledge in particular the Coroners Amendment Bill 2015, a Private Member's Bill tabled by Deputy Clare Daly, in relation to this issue.
