My Department is responsible for workforce planning for the local government sector, including monitoring of local government sector employment levels. Staffing numbers for the local authority sector are available on the Public Service Numbers Databank website, which is hosted and maintained by the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform, the local government element of which is available at the following link: http://databank.per.gov.ie/Public_Service_Numbers.aspx?rep=LA. The site provides access to local government sector staffing data from 2008 to end Q1 2017, which are the most recent figures available.

The data gathered focuses on broad numbers relating to employees, and is not broken down by department.

Under section 159 of the Local Government Act 2001, each Chief Executive is responsible for the staffing and organisational arrangements necessary for carrying out the functions of the local authorities for which he or she is responsible. In this regard, it is a matter for each individual Chief Executive to recruit and assign staff to specific functional areas.
