Ceisteanna (496)

Denise Mitchell

Ceist:

496. Deputy Denise Mitchell asked the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government his plans to extend the eligibility criteria for postal voting to persons who suffer from mental illnesses or disorders, such as agoraphobia or severe social anxiety or other mental illnesses or disorders, which make attending a polling station in person difficult; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I refer to the reply to Parliamentary Question No. 1338 of 7 November 2017 which sets out the position in this matter.

I have no proposals at present to extend existing arrangements for postal voting. However, electoral law is subject to ongoing review and, in particular in the period ahead, provisions - operational and legal - for voter registration will be subject to review as part of the voter registration modernisation project announced in March 2017.
