486. Deputy Martin Kenny asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine if the number of persons receiving ANC payments for mountain-type lands is an indication of the percentage of persons farming on hill land here; and if these farms are bigger or smaller than the average farm size here. A total of 27,447 farmers applied for the Areas of Natural Constraint Scheme with land designated as 'mountain land' under the Scheme. The average amount of mountain lands held per applicant is 22.37 hectares, which is below the national average farm size of 32 hectare.  However, these applicants may also hold other categories of land.
