138. Deputy Jackie Cahill asked the Minister for Finance his plans to introduce legislation or regulations that would encourage the mainstream banks to make residential properties that are in their ownership available to the market to reduce the shortage of housing (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. The sale of residential properties in bank ownership is a matter for individual commercial banks.

I understand that the Housing Agency which is under the remit of the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government is currently assessing the suitability of a number of empty properties which are being offered to the State for purchase as social houses by banks and private equity funds.
