656. Deputy Thomas Byrne asked the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government the position regarding offices occupied by Intreo or social welfare branches being exempt from commercial rates; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [37218/19]
Amharc ar fhreagraGenerally, property occupied by Government Departments are exempt from commercial rates. In the case of the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection, under the Social Welfare Consolidation Act 2005, there is a requirement that expenses incurred in relation to the operation of the Social Insurance Fund must be recouped to other Government Departments. This includes a contribution in lieu of commercial rates, apportioned on the basis of buildings or portions of buildings where the Social Insurance Fund is administered.
