68. Deputy Michael McGrath asked the Minister for Finance the number of personal and business credit cards in operation here; the proportion of credit cards in cases in which the consumer regularly ends up paying interest; the level of arrears or overdue repayments in respect of the cards; the amount of stamp duty collected annually on same; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Amharc ar fhreagraThe Central Bank publishes data on its website for the number of credit cards in Ireland, and it reports that there were 1,579,561 active credit cards in issue as of January 2020. I am informed by the Central Bank that it does not publish data on the number of credit cards with an interest bearing balance, on arrears or on overdue repayments on credit cards.
I am advised by Revenue that information in relation to the yield from stamp duty, including the amount from credit cards, can be found on the statistics page of the Revenue website. Stamp duty receipts, representing matured tax liabilities, are recorded as €40.63 million for 2018, the latest year for which figures are confirmed. I am informed by Revenue that the table will be updated with figures for 2019 when these become available.
