Ceisteanna (468)

Brendan Griffin

Ceist:

468. Deputy Brendan Griffin asked the Minister for Education the action she is taking to address the unavailability of enrolment places for local children at a school (details supplied); if her attention has been drawn to the concerns of local children and parents who are being turned away from the school; if she has considered the overall circumstances in relation to secondary education provision in the mid-Kerry school catchment area; if she will take action to address the problem; and if she will make a statement on the matter. I can confirm to the Deputy, that the question of enrolment in individual schools is the responsibility of the managerial authority of those schools. It is the responsibility of the managerial authorities of schools to implement an enrolment policy in accordance with the Education Act 1998 and the Education (Admission to Schools) Act 2018.

I would also advise the Deputy that where capacity issues arise, it may not be as a result of lack of accommodation but may be driven by the following factors:

- Duplication of applications – pupils have applied for a place to a number of schools in the area.

- School of choice – pupils can’t get a place in their preferred school while there are places in other schools in the town/area.

- Some towns/areas have single sex schools and while places are available in the school there are not available to all pupils

- External draw – pupils coming from outside the local area.

Until these issues are discussed with the relevant school authorities the true extent of any capacity issue will only become known.

Similar to the process adopted in advance of the current academic year, my Department is engaging with patron bodies, including those in the mid-Kerry area, to identify particular capacity requirements for the forthcoming year(s) which may necessitate action.
