Deputy Emer Higgins asked the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science the process by which a college application by a person (details supplied) can be appealed, given that the university has advised the prospective student to appeal through the Teaching Council but the Teaching Council has advised that it does not have any remit with regard to the appeals process. Amharc ar fhreagraThe University of Limerick is an autonomous institution within the meaning of the Universities Act 1997. It is therefore academically independent and entitled to regulate its own academic affairs and administrative processes, including in relation to admissions. Neither I nor my Department have a role in these internal processes.
Admission to the post-primary PME is contingent on the applicant's primary degree meeting the requirements of the Teaching Council of Ireland for the purposes of teaching their chosen subject(s). If an applicant's primary degree does not fulfil these requirements they would be unable to register with the Teaching Council even upon completion of the PME.
The University of Limerick operates an applicant appeals process, which any applicant who is dissatisfied with the university's decision In relation to their admission to a programme may avail of.
