Deputy Catherine Connolly asked the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications if analysis has been carried out his Department into the impact of artificial light on Ireland’s natural environment and the ecosystems within it; if so, if there are plans for light pollution free areas in cities around Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Amharc ar fhreagraThere is currently no legislation in Ireland dealing specifically with environmental light pollution, and my Department has no role in this regard.
I am advised that the amount of light that might emanate from a proposed development in terms of potential impacts on adjoining properties and protecting their residential amenity is considered in assessing individual planning applications on a case by case basis. However there is no specific national strategy in place in relation to 'light pollution' under planning or environmental legislation.
