Ceisteanna (6)

Francis Noel Duffy

Ceist:

6. Deputy Francis Noel Duffy asked the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications if his Department has considered issuing a directive to change water storage requirements in Dublin City Council which have not been updated since the 1970s, given that offices now use less than 20 litres per person per day as a result of water conservation improvements, in comparison to the 45-litre requirement; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I have no function in relation to this issue. Irish Water is under the remit of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. Transfer requested to Housing but declined. They said 'assuming this question relates to the overall management of the water supply for Dublin City, this is not a matter for our Minister. It is in operational matter for which Irish Water is independently responsible'. Since 1 January 2014, Irish Water has statutory responsibility for all aspects of water services planning, delivery and operation at national, regional and local levels under section 7 of the Water Services (No. 2) Act 2013. Furthermore, I understand that Irish Water has also established a dedicated team to deal with representations and queries from public representatives. The team can be contacted via email to oireachtasmembers@water.ie or by telephone on a dedicated number, 0818 578 578.
