An Garda Síochána

Ceisteanna (292)

Brendan Griffin

Ceist:

292. Deputy Brendan Griffin asked the Minister for Justice the number of Garda vehicles written off by insurers or irreparably damaged following instances of ramming of Garda vehicles in 2019, 2020, 2021 and to date in 2022; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [49063/22]

I have contacted An Garda Síochána for the information requested by the Deputy, regretfully this information was not available in time. I will write to the Deputy once the information is to hand.

The following deferred reply was received under Standing Order 51
I refer to Parliamentary Question No. 292 of 5 October 2022 where you sought:
“The number of Garda vehicles written off by insurers or irreparably damaged following instances of ramming of Garda vehicles in 2019, 2020, 2021 and to date in 2022”.
As you will recall, I sought the information you requested from the Garda authorities and undertook to contact you again once the information was to hand.
I can assure you that I strongly condemn any assault on, or action that causes harm to, serving members of An Garda Síochána or any action that causes damage to Garda resources or public property. An Garda Síochána perform a vital function in providing safety and security to our communities and should be applauded and supported for their service, not subject to assault or harm in the execution of their duties.
As you will be aware, under the Garda Síochána Act 2005 (as amended), the Garda Commissioner is responsible for the administration and management of An Garda Síochána, including the purchase, allocation, and effective and efficient use of Garda vehicles. As Minister, I have no direct role in these matters.
I am advised, however, that Garda management keeps the distribution of resources under continual review to ensure their optimum use in light of identified operational needs and emerging crime trends.
I am further advised that in cases where official vehicles are written off as a result of ramming Garda Fleet Management makes the decision as to whether the vehicle is considered to be end of life or otherwise.
The table below which has been provided to me by the Garda authorities sets out the number of vehicles written off as a result of ramming for the years 2019 to end 2021 and at 3 October 2022.

As the Deputy will be aware it is the policy of An Garda Síochána not to make public comment in respect of policing operations or provide details of equipment used to aid Garda operations.

I am advised by the Garda authorities that there were a range of Garda vehicles involved in instances of ramming of Garda vehicles in 2019, 2020, 2021 and to date in 2022. The specific make and model is considered operationally sensitive and therefore the Deputy will appreciate that I am unable to provide a full breakdown of the information requested.

As the Deputy will be aware, in accordance with the Garda Síochána Act 2005 (as amended), the Garda Commissioner is responsible for the management and administration of An Garda Síochána, which includes decisions on the deployment of personnel among the various Garda Divisions. As Minister, I have no role in these matters.

The Government is committed to ensuring that An Garda Síochána has the resources it needs, with the unprecedented allocation provided in Budget 2023 of €2.14 billion.
