575. Deputy Michael Healy-Rae asked the Minister for Justice with regard to the recruitment of gardaí, the number of candidates that were invited to take part in the fitness examination; and the number that completed the examination (details supplied). [4815/23]

I have requested the information sought by the Deputy from the Garda authorities, however, this information was not available in time. I will write to the Deputy once the information is to hand.

The following deferred reply was received under Standing Order 51.

I refer to Parliamentary Question Nos. 575 and 576 of 31 January 2023 where you sought: “To ask the Minister for Justice with regard to the recruitment of Garda, the number of candidates that were invited to take part in the fitness examination; and the number that completed the examination (details supplied).

“To ask the Minister for Justice with regard to the recruitment of Garda, the number of candidates that were successful in passing the fitness examination (details supplied).

As you will recall, I sought the information you requested from the Garda authorities and undertook to contact you again once the information was to hand.

The Garda Commissioner is responsible by law for the management and administration of Garda business, which includes the recruitment and training of Garda members and staff. As Minister I have no direct role in such matters.

I am informed by the Garda Authorities that the table below provides a breakdown of candidates invited to the Physical Competence Test (PCT) from the previous three recruitment campaigns:

I understand that candidates can avail of a re-test if they fail the initial Physical Competence Test (PCT). If they fail the re-test they can make an appeal for a third PCT. If the appeal is granted this is their third and final attempt at the PCT.

Therefore, the numbers above include all tests conducted including where an individual failed and had additional opportunities to pass at a re-test or at an appeal.
