387. Deputy Ged Nash asked the Minister for Education her Department’s policy on the provision of paid maternity and paternity leave for teachers who become parents through surrogacy; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [14765/23]
Amharc ar fhreagraLeave entitlement for public servants are determined by the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform. Under Section 24 of the Education Act 1998, the Minister for Education, with the concurrence of the Minister for Department of Public Expenditure and Reform (DPER), is authorised to determine the terms and conditions of employment for teachers employed in approved teaching posts funded by monies provided by the Oireachtas.
The recognition of surrogacy is a matter for Government as a whole, is not within the remit of the Department.
