Deputy Seán Canney asked the Minister for Public Expenditure, National Development Plan Delivery and Reform the additional flood relief measures his Department can put in place to alleviate flooding of 20 acres of land which occurs each year from August 2023 to January 2024; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Amharc ar fhreagraThe Office of Public Works (OPW) is responsible for the maintenance of arterial drainage schemes completed under the Arterial Drainage Acts, 1945 and 1995, as amended. The location concerned forms part of the Corrib-Headford Arterial Drainage Scheme. The channel at the location is prioritised as it drains the area surrounding and including Headford Town.
A recent inspection of the channel, shows it to be free flowing. Due to the proximity of Lough Corrib, the channel in question is subject to high water levels in the winter as the lake levels rise.
Maintenance on the channel is planned for this year and my officials in the OPW are monitoring the channel.
