Vol. 7 No. 5

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CLAIM FOR MOTOR REPAIRS.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that a motor car the property of Mr. J. J. Robinson, Newberry Hall. Carbury. Co. Kildare, which cost £830 in March, 1920, and the receipt for which was forwarded to the Claims Committee, was commandeered by the National Army in August, 1922, and that in January, 1923, it was located in Edenderry Barracks a complete wreck, with only three wheels, screen broken, and that it appeared on enquiry that it had been in the Barrack Square for four months without even the hood up; that Mr. Robinson at first refused to take back the car, but was told he would get nothing if he persisted, and that finally the car was given over to him in January, 1924; that although the estimate for repairs is £263, the Claims Committee have only offered £200, and whether he will see that the owner is reasonably compensated.

The car in question was placed at Mr. Robinson's disposal in November, 1922. He, however, refused to take it over. The Army cannot accept responsibility for its subsequent depreciation. Under the circumstances it is considered that £200 is ample compensation.

Arising out of the Minister's answer, does he know that Mr. Robinson did not take over the car because it was in such a state of dilapidation?

No, but I will make further enquiries into the matter.
