Vol. 7 No. 25

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - GARDA SIOCHANA STATION AT CHAPELIZOD.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that the Board of Works have intimated to Mr. Nolan, "St. John's," Chapelizod, that it is intended to acquire his private residence under the Civic Guard (Acquisition of Premises) Act, 1923, for use as a Gárda Síochána Station, notwithstanding that the owner of the lands adjoining "St. John's" intends to let them for bungalow residences; and whether, in view of the need for housing, he will arrange for other premises to be acquired as a station for the guard.

It has been decided to establish a Gárda Síochána Station at Chapelizod, and the Commissioners of Public Works have been requested to provide suitable accommodation. The Commissioners report that the house known as "St. John's," which is vacant and for sale, is the only suitable accommodation available, and they are taking steps to acquire it for the use of the Gárda. I cannot accept the suggestion that the existence of a police station in a locality operates to depreciate the value of adjacent buildings or to prevent further building in the locality.

Might I ask the Minister that in a matter of this description he would have further inquiries made, because I do not agree with his reply that——

The Deputy cannot go into that at this stage.

Might I ask if the Minister will have further inquiries made into the matter?

Very full inquiries have been made, and I am satisfied, in the absence of any further representations, that they are adequate.

Will the Minister make special inquiries as to whether this house is vacant and for sale? The information conveyed to me is that it is occupied.

The information conveyed to me is that it is vacant and for sale. In view of the conflict I will make further inquiries.
