Vol. 8 No. 3

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - DISCHARGED SOLDIER'S ILLNESS.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he is aware that Private Christopher Treacy, Army No. 48470, who attested on January 15th, 1923, and was certified physically fit by Dr. Ellison, was discharged on September 9th, 1923, suffering from liver disease, contracted during the discharge of his duties, and from which disease he died; further, whether his wife and five young children, being in a destitute condition, were granted £1 per week home assistance by the Kildare County Board of Health, and whether he will reconsider this case with a view to making provision for the maintenance of the deceased's dependents out of State funds, and thus relieve this charge on the local rates.

It appears that the malady from which Mr. Treacy suffered was one of long standing. He served for only eight months in the National Army, and prior to his discharge a Medical Board certified that his disability was not due to such service. In the circumstances I regret that it is not practicable to make any grant to his dependents.
