Vol. 8 No. 4

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - COMPENSATION COURT.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state whether the negotiations with the British Government for the establishment of a Compensation Court to hear the claims of traders—other than those whose claims come under the terms of reference of the Shaw Commission—for losses caused by British military action during the years 1920 and 1921, have yet been completed; and, if so, whether an early announcement will be made with a view to relieving the anxiety of the large number of persons who are awaiting a decision on this important matter.

The negotiations referred to by the Deputy in regard to the setting up of a Compensation Court to hear cases of the kind mentioned have not yet been completed, and accordingly I am not in a position to make the announcement requested.

Is the President aware that a similar answer was given to a similar question six months ago by the Minister for Finance? Will he say when it is anticipated that these negotiations will come to an end and something definite will be done?

I am not in a position to give any further information on it. I know perfectly well the number of cases which are concerned in this matter, but it is complicated by numbers of other cases. In endeavouring to give the most general satisfaction possible considerable time has been taken to have the matter settled on a satisfactory basis.
