Vol. 8 No. 17

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - MAYO REGISTRAR'S OFFICE.

LIAM MAC SIOGHUIRD

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware that great inconvenience has been caused to the people of Ballinrobe, Claremorris, Ballina, Swinford, Belmullet and Westport Unions by the removal of the local records of births, deaths and marriages to the County Home, Castlebar, and whether in view of this fact he would take steps to revert to the old system.

The answer to both parts of the question is in the negative. The Assistant Superintendent Registrar in Ballinrobe refuses, however, to hand over the books, and I am having the necessary action taken.

Similar transfers have been carried out in other counties according to the progress of amalgamation schemes under the County Boards of Health in pursuance of the provisions of the Local Government (Temporary Provisions) Act, 1923. The centralisation of the records in each county will make for safety and substantial economy in administration, while no serious inconvenience will be caused to the public.

Is the Minister aware that each rural clerk in the district offices of the Superintendent Registrar will have to get compensation and pension from the County Council for loss of office?

I am not of course, personally aware of that, but I can bring the fact to the notice of the Minister.

It is a separate question.
